January 10, 2026,
members of the Kurdish community in Calgary gathered in front of Calgary City Hall to raise their voices against the ongoing violence and repression targeting Kurdish civilians.
The protest was held in solidarity with Kurds in Sheikh Maqsoud and Ashrafiyah (Aleppo, Syria) and Rojhilat (Eastern Kurdistan), where civilians continue to endure bombardment, arbitrary arrests, displacement, and grave human rights violations. Families, elders, youth, and children stood side by side, holding flags, banners, and photographs to remind the world that Kurdish lives matter.
This gathering was a call for:
1. Protection of Kurdish civilians from terrorist groups masquerading as the transitional government in Damascus and state repression by Mullah Regime in Iran.
2. Accountability for crimes committed against the Kurdish people and violations of human rights.
3. Recognition of Kurdish rights as fundamental human rights and their struggle for a free and just society.
4. International action and intervention grounded in justice and humanitarian law.
The world knows too well that the Kurdish people have made immense sacrifices in the fight against extremists and in the pursuit of regional and global security. Hence, this protest served as a reminder that silence in the face of injustice only enables further suffering and encourages perpetrators.
Last but not least, we extend our sincere gratitude to everyone who attended, showed solidarity, and helped ensure the protest remained peaceful and respectful. Your presence sent a powerful message: we exist, we will not be silent, and we stand for dignity, justice, and peace.
