Despite the weather conditions, we gathered for the Nawroz fire lighting. Although not many people were able to attend, we still lit the Nawroz fire and danced around it, finding warmth and joy in the celebration.
Nawroz is not only the celebration of the new year and the arrival of spring but also a symbol of freedom and resistance. It commemorates the legendary uprising of Kawa the Blacksmith against the tyrannical Assyrian king Zahak. Kawa led a successful revolt against Zahak, who have terrorized the region by demanding the sacrifice of young children. Kawa have killed Zahak and lit a fire on a hilltop to signal the end of Zahak's rule and the beginning of a new era of freedom and light.
Therefore, the Nawroz fire for Kurds symbolizes the victory of light over darkness, freedom over oppression, and the Kurdish people's resilience and struggle for their rights and cultural identity. It is a time of joy and renewal, where Kurds come together to celebrate their heritage, express their hopes for the future, and remember their history of resistance
